Monomorium nipponense (Princess Ant)

Japanese: ヒメアリ(姫蟻) - ヒメアリ（英語表記）Monomorium nipponense

An insect of the Hymenoptera family, Formicidae. Workers are 1.5-2mm long, light yellowish brown with only the abdomen being blackish brown, shiny overall, and have two segments on the petiole. They are found in Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu. They build nests in dry grass stalks or rotting wood in sunny places, and sometimes invade indoors to damage food or sting the soft parts of human skin. The house ant M. pharaonis (English name Pharaoh's ant), which is similar to this species, is 1.9-2.5mm long, yellowish brown with a slightly dark tip of the abdomen, and the cephalothorax and petiole are densely dotted and not shiny.

膜翅目アリ科の昆虫。働きアリの体長1.5～2mm，淡黄褐色で腹部のみ黒褐色，全体に光沢があり腹柄は2節。本州，四国，九州に分布する。日当りのよい場所の枯草の茎や腐朽した木材の中などに巣をつくり，ときには屋内に侵入して食品を加害したり，人の皮膚の柔らかい部分を刺すことがある。本種に似たイエヒメアリM.pharaonis(英名Pharaoh’s ant)は体長1.9～2.5mm，黄褐色で腹部の先端はやや暗色，頭胸および腹柄には微小な点刻が密布し光沢がない。
