1869‐1949 A Dutch missionary and anthropologist. He was educated as a missionary and emigrated to Sulawesi in Indonesia (then the Dutch East Indies) in 1891, where he engaged in research while carrying out missionary work on the shores of Lake Poso in the center of the island for about 40 years. His research area extended to Sumatra, and in particular in the study of animism, he proposed the concept of "Ziel stof," making a significant contribution to the ethnology of religion.
