Black Legend - Kuroidensetsu (English) Black Legend

Japanese: 黒い伝説 - くろいでんせつ（英語表記）Black Legend

It originally arose from the resentment felt by Italians against the Aragonese royal family, who had conquered Sicily and Sardinia, and gradually expanded to cover the whole of Spain. In the 16th and 17th centuries, European countries hostile to Spain, for political, economic, or religious reasons, exaggerated and fabricated the cruelty of the Spanish, claiming that "throughout their long history, the Spaniards have been a cruel, intolerant, greedy, and hypocritical nation." In particular, countries hostile to the hegemony of Spain under the Habsburg dynasty used the religious intolerance and cruel torture seen in the Inquisition, and the cruel acts of the conquistadors in the conquest of the Indies, to launch anti-Spanish movements and create the "black legend."
