Island Arc - Touko

Japanese: 島弧 - とうこ

An archipelago that forms an archipelago like a bow. It is roughly the same as the Kasai Islands. It is also called an arc-shaped archipelago. The Ryukyu Islands and the Aleut Islands are typical examples. Most of them are around the Pacific Ocean, especially in the western part, and some are in the Atlantic Ocean between the West Indies and South America and Antarctica. They are characterized by highly explosive active volcanoes, frequent large and small earthquakes, deep earthquakes reaching depths of several hundred kilometers, significant gravity anomalies, and deep parallel trenches. Parts of continents that have the same characteristics as island arcs (for example, the Andes Mountains) are called continental arcs. These areas are the most active areas on the Earth's surface today, and are thought to be where oceanic plates are subducting.

弓なりに弧を描いて並ぶ列島。花綵(かさい)列島とほぼ一致。弧状列島とも。琉球諸島やアレウト列島はその典型的な例で，大部分は太平洋の周辺，特に西部に多く，大西洋には西インド諸島と南米〜南極大陸間のものとがある。爆発性の激しい活火山，頻発(ひんぱつ)する大小の地震，深さ数百kmに達する深発地震，著しい重力異常，並行する深い海溝(かいこう)などが特徴的。大陸の一部でこのような島弧と同じ特徴をもつ場所（たとえばアンデス山脈）を陸弧という。これらの地域は現在の地球表面で最も活動的な地域で，海洋プレートが沈み込んでいるところと考えられている。
