An archipelago that forms an archipelago like a bow. It is roughly the same as the Kasai Islands. It is also called an arc-shaped archipelago. The Ryukyu Islands and the Aleut Islands are typical examples. Most of them are around the Pacific Ocean, especially in the western part, and some are in the Atlantic Ocean between the West Indies and South America and Antarctica. They are characterized by highly explosive active volcanoes, frequent large and small earthquakes, deep earthquakes reaching depths of several hundred kilometers, significant gravity anomalies, and deep parallel trenches. Parts of continents that have the same characteristics as island arcs (for example, the Andes Mountains) are called continental arcs. These areas are the most active areas on the Earth's surface today, and are thought to be where oceanic plates are subducting. →Related topics: Seafloor topography | Volcanism | Green Tuff Movement | Pacific Ocean Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
