Quenching oil - Yakiireyu (English spelling)

Japanese: 焼入油 - やきいれゆ（英語表記）quenching oil

Mineral oil for heat treatment such as quenching and tempering of steel and other metals. JIS specifies it as a heat treatment oil as shown in the table. In the table, materials that are easy to harden by quenching refer to high carbon steel and alloy steel, while materials that are difficult to harden by quenching refer to low carbon steel. Type 1, No. 2 is required to have a faster cooling rate than Type 1, No. 1. In other words, the regulation requires that the cooling time required from 800°C to 400°C in a cooling performance test using a silver rod be 5 seconds or less for Type 1, No. 1, and 4 seconds or less for Type 1, No. 2.

鉄鋼その他の金属の焼入れ，焼戻しなどの熱処理用の鉱油。JISでは熱処理油として表のように規定されている。表中，焼入れ硬化しやすい材料とは高炭素鋼，合金鋼などをいい，また焼入れ硬化しにくい材料とは低炭素鋼などをいう。1種2号は1種1号にくらべて冷却速度が大きいことが要求されている。すなわち規定では，銀棒を使った冷却性能試験で800℃から400℃までの冷却所要時間が，1種1号では5秒以下に対し，1種2号では4秒以下となっている。
