Black Rain

A full-length novel by Ibuse Masuji. It was serialized in Shincho magazine from the January 1965 issue to the September 1966 issue. It is a heavy, documentary novel that deals with the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. About five years after the war, Shizuma Shigematsu, a survivor of the atomic bomb, was planning to marry his niece Yasuko, but she soon began to show symptoms of radiation sickness, and the engagement was eventually called off. This prompted Shigematsu to take on the challenge of documenting the atomic bombing. Using this framework, the hell of the atomic bombing is portrayed with amazing equanimity through the eyes of a calm person living through it, making it a masterpiece of war fiction rather than an atomic bomb novel. A masterpiece of Ibuse literature.

井伏鱒二(いぶせますじ)の長編小説。1965年（昭和40）1月号から66年9月号まで『新潮』に連載。広島の原爆を扱った、重い記録的小説である。被爆者閑間(しずま)重松の姪(めい)矢須子(やすこ)に、戦後5年ほどして結婚話が持ち上がるが、やがて彼女に原爆症の症状が出始め、結局破談になる。そのことをきっかけとして、重松は原爆の記録に挑む。そういう枠組みを借りて、原爆地獄が、冷静な生活者の目を通して、みごとな平静さで写し出され、原爆小説というよりは戦争小説の最高傑作となりえている。井伏文学の代表作。
