French film director. Born in Bordeaux. After studying architecture in Paris, he began making films on his own around 1931, and joined the Army Film Unit to work on documentaries. After directing seven short films between 1937 and 1943, he attracted attention with "The Battle of the Railroad" (1946), which depicted the resistance of French railroad workers. He then produced works deeply connected to anti-war sentiment, such as "The Fangs of the Sea" (1946), set on a German submarine, and "Forbidden Games" (1952), which lyrically depicts a war orphan. He turned to highly literary works with "The Tavern" (1955), a film adaptation of Zola's novel, but then further moved away from that world and began to focus more on entertainment after "Purple Noon" (1960).
