Kinmon Gozan Paulownia - Kinmon Gozan Paulownia

Kabuki script. Historical piece. Five acts. Written by Namiki Gohei. First performed by Arashi Hinasuke I and others at a theater in Kado, Osaka, in April 1778 (An'ei 7). A representative Kabuki work that dramatizes the story of the great thief Ishikawa Goemon. The story is about Konomura Oinosuke, a vassal of Hisatsugu, the adopted son of Mashiba Hisayoshi (Toyotomi Hideyoshi), who is actually a Ming Dynasty nationalist, Sosokei. After his plot to take control of Japan is foiled and he is destroyed, his orphaned son, Ishikawa Goemon, takes up his father's ambition and sets his sights on Hisayoshi. In recent years, the second act of the original story, "Nanzenji Sanmon," has been separated and is often performed under the title "Roumon Gosan Kiri." Commonly known as "Mountain Gate." Goemon, who was admiring the view from the top of the Nanzenji Sanmon tower, learns that he is the orphaned son of Sosokei from a silk letter in blood that a white hawk has flown in its mouth. Goemon realizes that the pilgrim below him is Hisayoshi, his father's enemy, in disguise, and throws a shuriken at him, but Hisayoshi takes it lightly and they part ways. Although it is a short scene of just a dozen minutes, it is a culmination of stylized beauty, with Goemon's famous line, "What a magnificent view, what a magnificent view," and the spectacular display of the luxurious mountain gate props. Recent full-length performances include the research performance "Shunjukai" (1967) by Ennosuke Ichikawa III, and an independent performance by the National Theatre.
