A literary magazine from Imperial Russia. Also translated as "Contemporaries." Founded in 1836 by Pushkin in Petersburg (now St. Petersburg). In 1846, Nekrasov and Panaev bought the publishing rights, appointed Belinsky as editor-in-chief, and changed the quarterly publication to a monthly the following year. In the 1950s, Chernyshevsky and Dobrolyubov took control of the editorial department, and the magazine took on the appearance of an organ of revolutionary democrats, but by 1961 the circulation had exceeded 7,000. It was closed by imperial decree in June 1866. During this time, prominent writers, poets, and critics contributed to the magazine, and it had a powerful influence on the development of Russian literature.
