Rock azalea - Rock azalea

A deciduous shrub of the Ericaceae family (APG classification: Ericaceae). It is grass-like, 5-10 cm tall, with thin stems that spread by extending long underground stems. The leaves are alternate, with 2-4 leaves gathered at the ends of the branches, broadly ovate or broadly elliptical, 3-5 cm long, short and pointed at the tips, with sparse fine sawtooth edges, and soft hairs along the veins on the undersides. Two or three bell-shaped white flowers with a pale pink tinge bloom near the ends of the branches in June and July. The corolla is 5-6 mm long with five shallow lobes at the end and 10 stamens. The fruits are elliptical and spherical, 10-12 mm in diameter, and ripen red in September and October and can be eaten. It grows in the forests and forest edges of the subalpine zone to the pumila zone north of the Chubu region of Honshu, and is distributed in Hokkaido, the Kuril Islands, Sakhalin, Kamchatka, the Amur, and Ussuri.

ツツジ科（APG分類：ツツジ科）の落葉小低木。草状で高さ5～10センチメートル、茎は細く、長い地下茎を伸ばして繁殖する。葉は互生し、枝先に2～4枚集まり、広卵形ないし広楕円(こうだえん)形、長さ3～5センチメートルで先は短くとがり、縁(へり)に細かい鋸歯(きょし)がまばらにあり、裏面の脈に沿って軟毛がある。6～7月ごろ枝先近くに白色で淡紅色を帯びた鐘形の花が2、3個開く。花冠は長さ5～6ミリメートルで先が浅く5裂し、雄しべは10本。果実は楕円状球形で径10～12ミリメートルあり、9～10月に赤く熟して食べられる。本州の中部地方以北の亜高山帯からハイマツ帯の林内や林縁に生え、北海道、千島、樺太(からふと)（サハリン）、カムチャツカ、アムール、ウスリーに分布する。
