Gemeinschaft - Gemeinschaft (English spelling) German

This term was used by the German sociologist Tönnies in opposition to Gesellschaft, and is translated as "community society." Along with Gesellschaft, it is used as a basic concept in sociology. According to him, it is human will that makes society possible, which can be divided into essential will and will of choice in terms of the relationship between purpose and means, and Gemeinschaft is established based on essential will. While will of choice means the conscious selection of rational means to achieve a certain purpose, essential will is an expression of human essence itself. The actions that result from it are desired as ends in themselves, and are hardly considered rationally, appearing in individuals as unconscious moods or kindness, and are realized socially as a sense of unity with others, customs, or religion. Therefore, Gemeinschaft based on such essential will is different from one-sided, so to speak, artificial Gesellschaft based on a coincidence of interests, and is considered to be an entity with an organic life in itself as an essential bond between humans, with no room for exchange, buying and selling, or contracts, where people emotionally fuse with their whole personalities and share their fate with intimate mutual understanding. Therefore, even if people sometimes oppose each other, they are still essentially united. Tönnies lists as examples of such Gemeinschaft the family based on blood ties, the village based on local ties, and the city based on friendship.

Tönnies used Gemeinschaft and its counterpart Gesellschaft not simply as typological concepts of society, but as indicators of the historical development of society, and believed that the era of Gemeinschaft was followed by the era of Gesellschaft. This idea is now accepted in sociology as the diagram "from Gemeinschaft to Gesellschaft."

ドイツの社会学者テンニエスがゲゼルシャフトと対置して用いた語で、共同社会という訳語があてられ、ゲゼルシャフトとともに社会学の基本概念として用いられている。彼によれば、社会を成り立たせるのは人間の意志であるが、これは目的と手段との関係において本質意志と選択意志とに分けられ、本質意志に基づいて成立するのがゲマインシャフトである。選択意志が一定目的の達成のための合理的な手段の意識的な選択を意味するのに対して、本質意志は、人間の本質そのものの表現である。そこから生じる行為はそれ自体目的として欲せられ、ほとんど合理的に考慮されることなく、無意識的な気分や親切として個人に現れ、他者との一体感や慣習あるいは宗教として社会的に実現される。したがってこのような本質意志に基づくゲマインシャフトは、利害の一致に基づく一面的ないわば人工的なゲゼルシャフトとは異なって、人間の本質的な結合として、それ自体有機的な生命をもつ実在と考えられ、交換や売買や契約などの入り込む余地はなく、そこでは人々は全人格をもって感情的に融合し、親密な相互の了解のもとに運命を共にする。したがってそこでは、ときに人々が互いに対立することがあっても、なお人々は本質的には結合している。テンニエスは、このようなゲマインシャフトとして、血縁に基づく家族、地縁に基づく村落、友情に基づく都市をあげる。

　そしてテンニエスは、このようなゲマインシャフトと、それに対置されるゲゼルシャフトを、単に社会の類型概念としてのみでなく、社会の歴史的な発展を示すものとして用い、ゲマインシャフトの時代にゲゼルシャフトの時代が続くと考えた。この考えは今日では「ゲマインシャフトからゲゼルシャフトへ」という図式で社会学に受け入れられている。
