During the Paleozoic era, 200 to 500 million years ago, a scorpion-like animal called the Erythropoda (giant scorpions) lived in the sea, with a body length of 1 to 3 meters. This animal became extinct during the Permian period, but modern scorpions seem to have a common ancestor with this animal, and during the Silurian period (300 to 400 million years ago), they became smaller and moved to a land-based lifestyle.
