Born: January 27, 1893, Imabari [Died] December 25, 1961. Tokyo economist. Graduated from the University of Tokyo in 1917. Joined Sumitomo Sohonten, but became an assistant professor at his alma mater in 1920. After studying abroad in Europe and the United States, he became a professor in 1923 and taught colonial policy. In 1937, he resigned from the university due to the controversy over his anti-military and anti-war ideology in his essay "Ideals of the Nation" published in Chuokoron. After World War II, he returned to his alma mater in November 1945 with Ouchi Hyoe and others, and served as the president of the University of Tokyo for two terms from 1951 to 1957. He admired Uchimura Kanzo from his student days, and continued to preach anti-war and peace through Bible study groups and the magazine Jiaxin. His major works include "Taiwan under Imperialism" (1937), "Studies on the South Sea Islands" (1935), and posthumously "Complete Works of Yanaihara Tadao" (29 volumes, 63-65).
