1879‐1974 British scholar of Islamic architecture. From around 1919 he was involved in the research of Islamic architecture in Egypt, Syria, and Palestine. In 1931 he became a professor at Fouad I University (now Cairo University), where he founded the Institute of Islamic Art and Archaeology and served as its director until 1951. In 1956 he became a professor at the American University in Cairo. His publications include Early Islamic Architecture, 2 volumes (1932, 40) and Islamic Architecture in Egypt, 2 volumes (1952, 59), which are culminations of his research on early Islamic architecture, as well as the large-scale Bibliographical Commentary on Islamic Architecture, Arts, and Crafts (1961) and its supplement (1973).
