Mushanokoji Saneatsu - Mushanokoji Saneatsu

Japanese: 武者小路実篤 - むしゃのこうじさねあつ
Mushanokoji Saneatsu - Mushanokoji Saneatsu
Born: May 12, 1885 in Tokyo
[Died] April 9, 1976. Tokyo Novelist and playwright. Born into a former aristocratic family, he enrolled in the Department of Sociology at the University of Tokyo in 1906 but dropped out the following year. Together with Shiga Naoya, Ogimachi Kimikazu, and Kinoshita Rigen, he founded the circulating magazine Nozomi (1908), which he expanded into Shirakaba two years later, becoming the ideological leader of the Shirakaba school, which advocated self-love and self-respect. He attracted attention with his novels Omedetaki Hito (11) and Sekenachichi (12), which depicted his own romantic experiences, and published the play Sono Imouto (15). From that time onwards, he developed a strong inclination towards utopian socialism, and built a new village in Hyuga, Miyazaki Prefecture (18). He also wrote works such as "The Happy One" (19), "Friendship" (19), "The Fate of the Third Hermit" (23), and the plays "Long Live Humanity" (22) and "Love and Desire" (26). The number of works he produced was enormous, and in his later years he achieved a state of Eastern enlightenment and detachment from the world, as seen in "Mari Sensei" (49-50). He was a member of the Japan Art Academy, and was awarded the Order of Culture in 1976.
