Intra-domain conflict in the Kurume Domain at the end of the Edo Period. In 1844 (Koka 1), Arima Yoritao became the 10th lord of the Kurume Domain and, with the support of the Tenpo School, including Murakami Moritaro, who was influenced by Mitogaku, began reforming the domain's government. He issued a great frugality order and carried out military reforms, but he died suddenly just two years later, and the reforms were thwarted. In 1846, when his younger brother Yorishige became the 11th lord, the Tenpo School split into external comrades including Maki Izumi and internal comrades including Murakami Moritaro, and this escalated to the point where Murakami Moritaro attacked councilor Mabuchi Mitsugu at the Kurume Domain residence in Akabane, Edo, in 1850 (Kaei 3).

幕末久留米藩における藩内闘争。1844年(弘化1)久留米藩10代藩主となった有馬頼永（よりとう）は，水戸学の影響をうけた村上守太郎ら天保学派の支持を得て藩政改革に着手，大倹令を発し軍制改革を断行したが，わずか2年にして急逝し，藩政改革は挫折した。46年，弟の頼咸（よりしげ）が11代藩主に就任すると，天保学派は真木和泉らの外同志と村上守太郎らの内同志に分裂し，50年(嘉永3)江戸赤羽の久留米藩邸における村上守太郎の参政馬淵貢に対する刃傷事件にまで発展した。
