A city in northwestern Tajikistan. It is located in the western part of the fertile Fergana Basin, on the banks of the Syr Darya River, close to the borders with Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan. It is one of the oldest cities in Central Asia and was an important location on the Silk Road. It is a major center for silk production, cotton, and food processing. タジキスタンの北西部の都市。肥沃なフェルガナ盆地の西部,シル・ダリヤ川の河岸に位置し,ウズベキスタン,キルギスとの国境にも近い。中央アジアの最も古い都市の一つで,シルクロード上の重要地点でもあった。絹生産の主要中心地で,ほかに綿,食品の加工などが行なわれている。ソビエト連邦時代にはレニナバードと呼ばれていた。人口14万7400人(2002)。
