A city in northwestern Tajikistan. It is located in the western part of the fertile Fergana Basin, on the banks of the Syr Darya River, close to the borders with Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan. It is one of the oldest cities in Central Asia and was an important location on the Silk Road. It is a major center for silk production, cotton, and food processing.
