French poet and writer. Born in Paris, he was influenced by Dada at an early age. In 1922, he joined the group led by Breton, and contributed to the formation of Surrealist theory by introducing hypnotic experiments. He remained an important member of the movement thereafter, but many of his novels, poems, and philosophical essays show a penchant for death and solitude, sadism, and sodomy, and bear the marks of an intense inner struggle. In 1935, he worked hard to mediate between Surrealism and the Communist Party, but was unable to do so and committed suicide.

フランスの詩人，作家。パリに生まれ，早くからダダの影響をうける。1922年にブルトンらのグループに加わり，催眠実験の導入によってシュルレアリスムの理論形成に寄与する。以後この運動の重要な一員として活動するが，その多くの小説や詩，哲学的エッセーには死と孤独の嗜好，サディズム，男色などの傾向があらわれ，激しい内面の格闘の跡をとどめる。1935年，シュルレアリスムと共産党との調停のために奔走したが果たせず，自殺をとげた。
