1900‐35 French poet and writer. Born in Paris, he was influenced by Dada at an early age. In 1922, he joined the group led by Breton, and contributed to the formation of Surrealist theory by introducing hypnotic experiments. He remained an important member of the movement thereafter, but many of his novels, poems, and philosophical essays show a penchant for death and solitude, sadism, and sodomy, and bear the marks of an intense inner struggle. In 1935, he worked hard to mediate between Surrealism and the Communist Party, but was unable to do so and committed suicide. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
