George Cruikshank

1792‐1878
British caricaturist and illustrator. Born in London, he took over his father Isaac's profession and quickly established himself as a social and political cartoonist. Following in the footsteps of Rowlandson and Gillray, he produced witty, sharp satires of the deterioration of British society, focusing on the royal family and the private life of the Prince Regent (later George IV). In the 1820s, he gained fame by turning to illustrations for works by Dickens and the Brothers Grimm. In his later years, he supported the temperance movement and produced the series "Wine Bottles," which took the evils of alcohol as its subject.

イギリスの風刺画家，挿絵画家。ロンドンに生まれ，父アイザックの職を継いで早くから社会･政治風刺画家としての地位を確立する。ローランドソン，ギルレーに続き，摂政皇太子(のちジョージ4世)の私生活など王室を中心にイギリス社会の荒廃を機知に富んだ鋭い風刺で描いた。1820年代から，ディケンズ，グリム兄弟らの挿絵画家に転身し名声を得る。晩年，禁酒運動を支持し，その悪弊を主題にしたシリーズ《酒瓶》を制作した。
