The name of an ancient Indian tribe. They are said to have entered northwestern India from Central Asia around the 5th century, spreading from Rajasthan to Gujarat, from which the present-day name Gujarat comes. They founded several dynasties, but the Pratihara dynasty became powerful and controlled most of northern India from the 8th century onwards, after which the tribe was classified as one of the Rajputs.
