Citric Acid Cycle

Also known as the TCA cycle, Krebs cycle, tricarboxylic acid cycle, etc. This is the most important cycle in which organic substances such as sugars and fatty acids are completely oxidized through respiration. It is not only found in animals, but also in many living organisms. Pyruvic acid produced by glycolysis becomes acetyl CoA and enters this cycle, where it combines with oxaloacetate to become citric acid. It then goes through a cycle of reactions while undergoing decarboxylation and dehydrogenation, resulting in the production of three molecules of carbon dioxide, two molecules of water, and 15 molecules of ATP from one molecule of pyruvic acid. Approximately 10 types of enzymes are involved, but these exist as a unified enzyme group in mitochondria in the cytoplasm, and are divided into oxidative decarboxylases and dehydrogenases based on their function.

TCA回路，クレブス回路，トリカルボン酸回路などとも。糖や脂肪酸などの有機物が呼吸により完全酸化される最も重要な回路。動物のみでなく，生物界に広く存在する。解糖で生じたピルビン酸はアセチルCoAとなって本回路に入り，オキザロ酢酸と結合してクエン酸になる。以後脱炭酸，脱水素を受けながら回路状の反応系を一巡し，その結果１分子のピルビン酸から３分子の二酸化炭素，２分子の水，15分子のATPを生じる。約10種ほどの酵素が関係するが，これらは細胞質中のミトコンドリアに統一ある酵素集団として存在し，作用の点から酸化的脱炭酸酵素群と脱水素酵素群とに分けられている。
