Ressentiment is a feeling of resentment or revenge. Because the weak are unable to directly express their dissatisfaction or hatred towards the strong, the internally pent up dissatisfaction and hatred are subconsciously repressed as resentment or a desire for revenge against the strong. This is ressentiment. The actions and thoughts of the masses against oppressive rulers often contain this twisted passion of resentment or desire for revenge, no matter how noble their ethics may be on the surface.

怨恨または復讐（ふくしゆう）感情と訳される。弱者はその弱さゆえに強者に対する不満や憎悪をストレートに表出することができないために，内攻的にうっ積した不満や憎悪は，強者に対する怨恨ないし復讐願望となって意識下に抑圧されている。これがルサンティマンである。圧制的な支配者に対する大衆の行動や思想には，表面上いかに高貴な倫理性が標榜されていようとも，しばしばこの屈折した怨みの激情ないし復讐欲がこめられている。
