Takeji Miki

Theater critic. His real name was Mori Tokujiro. He was the younger brother of Mori Ogai. He was born in Shimane Prefecture. He moved to Tokyo at the age of six. After graduating from the Imperial University School of Medicine, he opened a practice. He was familiar with theater from an early age, and wrote theater reviews under a pen name from his student days, and worked with his brother to translate and introduce Western plays. He participated in the editing of the magazine Kabuki Shinpo in 1892, and in 1890 took the lead to publish the first edition of the magazine Kabuki. He severely criticized the spectacle-oriented theater reviews of newspaper reporters at the time, and aimed to establish theater reviews for a new era, while defending classical Kabuki from an aesthetic point of view against superficial theatrical reform theories. His serialization of "Records of Forms" in the magazine Kabuki was a valuable resource for subsequent Kabuki research. <References> Toita Koji, "Miki Takeji" (Nihon Engeki, September 1944 issue)

演劇評論家。本名森篤次郎。森鴎外の弟。島根県生まれ。6歳のとき上京。帝国大学医科大卒業後,開業。幼少より演劇に親しみ,学生時代から筆名で劇評を書き,兄に協力して西欧戯曲の翻訳,紹介に努めた。明治25(1892)年から雑誌『歌舞伎新報』の編集に参加,33年より雑誌『歌舞伎』(第1次)を主宰刊行。当時の新聞記者達の見功者的な劇評をきびしくとがめ,新時代の演劇評の確立をめざす一方,皮相な演劇改良論に対しては美学的見地から古典歌舞伎を擁護した。雑誌『歌舞伎』に連載した「型の記録」は以後の歌舞伎研究の貴重な資料。<参考文献>戸板康二「三木竹二」(『日本演劇』1944年9月号)
