A lagoon located along the Pacific coast of Soma City in northern Fukushima Prefecture. It was formed by a sand spit extending from the southern part of the lake, and is long and narrow from north to south, covering an area of 5.8 square kilometers. The western shore forms a delta formed by the accumulation of sediment from the Utagawa and Koizumigawa rivers. An outlet (dug in 1905) is located west of Uno-misaki Cape at the northern end of the lake, and is connected to the open sea. Salt was once produced here, but now oyster and seaweed farming has taken root there since the Nakamura Domain era. Matsukawaura Fishing Port is located in the north, and is one of the fishing centers in northern Fukushima Prefecture. Small islands covered with pine trees are dotted within the lake, and it is rich in fish and shellfish, wild birds, and vegetation, making it the Matsukawaura Prefectural Natural Park. There are many accommodation facilities along the coast, and it is a good place for clam digging, swimming, and camping. There is a bus service from Soma Station on the JR Joban Line. [Harada Sakae] The Great East Japan Earthquake on March 11, 2011 caused great damage to the area, including the tsunami splitting the sand spit apart.
