Although there is a mountain range of the same name in Libya, the name usually refers to the central part of the Hajar Mountains (with the highest peak at 3,101m) that run from northwest to southeast on the inland side of the Batinah coastal plain facing the Gulf of Oman. Al-Akhdar means "green" in Arabic. This vast plain, located at an altitude of about 2,000m, is the heart of Oman, and with an abundance of groundwater, many isolated villages live a self-sufficient life. The "isolation" characteristic of Omani society comes from this. There are barracks and an air force base in Saiq. [Asai Nobuo] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
