Thomas Cranmer

English religious reformer. First Archbishop of Canterbury of the Church of England. He spoke out in favor of King Henry VIII during the divorce case, and in 1533, he declared the King's marriage to Catherine invalid and his marriage to Anne Boleyn legal. Under Edward VI, he played a central role in promoting reforms and contributed greatly to the creation of the Book of Common Prayer and the Forty-Two Articles. However, his fate was sealed when Mary ascended to the throne (Mary I), and he was burned alive for defending his new faith.

イギリスの宗教改革者。イングランド教会初代のカンタベリー大司教。国王ヘンリー8世の離婚問題では王のために有利な発言をし、1533年大司教に就任、王とキャサリンとの結婚の無効、アン・ブリンとの結婚の合法性を宣言した。エドワード6世の治下では改革の推進に中心的役割を演じ、「一般祈祷(きとう)書」と「42か条」の制定に大きく貢献した。だがメアリーの即位（メアリー1世）とともに運命は極まり、新しい信仰を守って最後には焚殺(ふんさつ)された。
