The direct descendants of the former Guarani are now very few in number (estimated at about 3,000-5,000) and are found in the border areas of Paraguay, Brazil, and Argentina. They are divided into three groups, called the Cayoba, the Mbuya, and the Niandeva. There is also a group in eastern Paraguay that lives mainly as hunters and gatherers, specifically called the Guayaqui. *Some of the terminology explanations that mention "Kayoba" are listed below.
