Ukai

Japanese: 烏海 - うかい
Ukai

A prefecture-level city in the western part of the Ordos Plateau in the south-central part of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region in northern China. It has jurisdiction over three city districts, including Haibowan and Wuda (as of 2016). It has a population of 555,800 (2016). It borders the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region. It runs along the Yellow River and is connected to the Baolan Line (Baotou-Lanzhou). Wuhai Airport opened in 2003. Formerly the two cities of Wuda and Haibowan were merged to become Wuhai in 1975. Wuhai has extremely abundant coal reserves, and receives salt and soda from the Jilantai Salt Pond via a branch of the Baolan Line, leading to the development of chemical, metallurgical, cement, and machinery industries. On the opposite bank of the Yellow River is the Ulanbuh Desert. The Yellow River Haibowan Water Conservancy Project began in 2010, and a huge dam was completed on the mainstream of the Yellow River that flows through the city in 2017.
