This gravity dam was completed in 1962 on the Dixence River, a tributary of the Rhône River in Switzerland. It is 284m high and the tallest concrete dam in the world. It has a crest length of 700m, a dam volume of 6 million m3, a maximum water level of 2,364m above sea level, a storage capacity of 400 million m3 and a generating capacity of 840,000 kW. When construction began in 1953, it was estimated to take 15 to 17 years, but improvements were made so that 1 million m3 of concrete could be poured per year, and it was completed in 8 years. Because it is a large dam, it was opened to the public halfway through construction, and for this reason, a special construction method was used, such as leaving gaps in the construction to prevent the water pressure of the reservoir from being applied to the concrete poured later, and then filling the gaps at the end.
