Born: August 15, 1927 in Rustenburg
[Died] June 26, 1973. Born in Dublin, South Africa, British choreographer. After dancing with the Cape Town Ballet Club and Sadler's Wells Ballet, he made his debut as a choreographer in 1942 with "The Soldier's Tale". In 1946, he moved to London and performed "Pineapple Pole" (1951), "The Lady and the Fool" (1954), "The Prince of the Pagodas" (1957), and other works with the Royal Ballet, establishing a firm position in contemporary British ballet. He later left the Royal Ballet and performed works commissioned by the New York City Ballet, the Paris Opera Ballet, and Ballet Rambert. In 1961, he became director of the Stuttgart Ballet in West Germany, where he created works with a strong theatrical flavor, such as "Romeo and Juliet" (1962), "Onegin" (1965), and "The Taming of the Shrew" (1969).

南アフリカ生れ，イギリスの振付師。ケープタウン・バレエ・クラブ，サドラーズ・ウェルズ・バレエ団で踊ったのち，1942年『兵士の物語』を振付け，振付師としてデビュー。 46年ロンドンに移り，ロイヤル・バレエ団で『パイナップル・ポール』 (1951) ，『貴婦人と馬鹿』 (54) ，『パゴダの王子』 (57) などを発表し，現代イギリス・バレエに確固とした地位を築いた。その後，ロイヤル・バレエ団を離れ，ニューヨーク・シティー・バレエ団やパリ・オペラ座バレエ団，バレエ・ランバートに委嘱されて作品を発表。 61年西ドイツのシュツットガルト・バレエ団のディレクターになり，『ロミオとジュリエット』 (62) ，『オネーギン』 (65) ，『じゃじゃ馬ならし』 (69) などの演劇色の濃い作品を作った。
