Reggio di Calabria (English spelling)
The capital of the province of Calabria in southern Italy. Population 178,736 (1994). Located at the toe of the boot-shaped Italian peninsula, facing the Strait of Messina, it is the departure and arrival point for ferries connecting the mainland and Sicily. Founded as an ancient Greek colony around the 8th century BC, it was called Rhēgion. At one time it succumbed to an attack by Syracuse in Sicily. In 270 BC it came under Roman control, and was one of the most important cities in southern Italy throughout the imperial period. After the fall of the Roman Empire, it prospered economically and culturally under the Byzantine Empire, and became the center of the Eastern Orthodox Church in the region.
