On the other hand, the view that the sensible is a means of perceiving the supersensible (Suger, abbot of the Saint-Denis Abbey) was also influential, and this view led to the creation of magnificent and luxurious Christian art from the Romanesque to the Gothic periods. In general, the Catholic Church has consistently recognized the important role of iconography in religious life from the Middle Ages through the early modern period. …

From [Gothic Art]

…Gothic art was primarily a city's cathedrals, parish churches, and urban secular architecture, and this was even more so in the case of late Gothic art. It should also be remembered that the Franciscans and Dominicans, who gave new impetus to this art, were mendicant orders of an urban nature. …

From the Abbey of Saint-Denis

...First, Saint Genevieve founded a monastery (late 5th century) for the cult that had formed around the tomb, and then King Dagobert rebuilt the church (early 7th century). The church was further remodeled at the end of the 8th century, again by Abbot Suger (c. 1080-1151), and again by Pierre de Montreuil (c. 1200-66) at the command of Louis IX in the 13th century. The monastery became the burial place of successive French kings after Dagobert, and Charlemagne made it a center of trade by granting it market and coinage privileges. ...

From [Synagogue]

…Here, Christ stands in the center, crowning the Ecclesia on the right and removing the veil of the Synagogue on the left. It bears the inscription by the abbot Suger: "What Moses veiled, the doctrine of Christ uncovers." This theme was adopted in the 13th-century carvings of Gothic cathedral portals, such as those in Strasbourg (where the Synagogue statue is now in the Cathedral Museum) and Reims. …
