...Szigligeti Ede (1814-78) wrote many plays and worked to popularize theater. We must also not forget the achievements of Kriza János (1811-75), who collected folk songs from the Székely region of Transylvania. After the defeat in the War of Independence (the 1848 Revolution), the country was faced with a period of hardship, including oppression and terrorism from Austria, but the works of Alany and Madáč, who were active during this period, are often pessimistic and reflect the times.
