Kurama Tengu

Japanese: 鞍馬天狗 - くらまてんぐ
Kurama Tengu
The title of a Noh piece. A kiri-noh piece (→ ono-noh). It is said to have been written by Miyamasusaku. It is performed by each school. A mountain ascetic (mae-jite) who lives in Sojo-ga-tani, deep in Kurama, appears in Kurama to enjoy cherry blossom viewing. Meanwhile, the sojo (waki) of Higashi-tani, who has been invited by the sojo of Nishi-tani as an emissary using his powers (ai), is enjoying cherry blossom viewing with a young boy and a priest, but the mountain ascetic breaks in and the group retreats, leaving only Shanao (ko-kata). The mountain ascetic takes pity on the young boy and shows him around famous flower spots, introduces himself as a great tengu, promises to teach him military tactics the next day, and flies away on a cloud (intermission). After Konoha tengu appears in the interlude, Shanao appears with a naginata on his shoulder. To the accompaniment of the O-Beshi music, a great tengu (Go-Jite, O-Beshi-ken mask, red head, large helmet cap, wide hunting robes, half-cut) appears with a feather fan in his hand, imparts the secrets of military strategy, promises to protect the warrior's fortune, and then disappears.
