hypothetical cohort

...When calculating how many children a group of girls born in a certain year will give birth to in their lifetime, or the death rate of the population born in a certain year, this is called the fertility or mortality rate (or survival rate) of an "actual cohort." However, when considering how many children a group of women born in a certain year will give birth to in their lifetime, given their age-specific fertility rate (the fertility rate of multiple cohorts), these cohorts are called "hypothetical cohorts." Life tables also use this concept.
