...The early chiefs are said to have had the character of shamans, but North African merchants arrived early on, and the society became increasingly Islamic. In the 14th century, it was a local territory of the Mali Empire, which claimed dominance over the Great Bend of the Niger River, but in the second half of the 15th century, the brave warrior King Sonni 'Ali (reigned 1464-92) overthrew the rule of the Mali Empire. Sonni 'Ali expanded his military conquests and became an arbitrary ruler over the subjugated societies.
