…In ancient Japan, the word “perception” meant “to know, to understand”; however, Nishi Amane used it as a translation of “perception” in his Japanese translation of the American Joseph Haven’s book “Mental Philosophy” (1857, 2nd edition 1869), “Psychology” (volumes 1 and 2) (1875-79), and since then, it has been used in philosophy and psychology as a translation of the English and French words “perception” and the German word “Wahrnehmung”. The word “perception” is made up of the prefix “per”, which means “completely” or “thoroughly”, and the Latin word “capere”, which means “to grasp” (the German word “Wahrnehmung” is made up of “wahr”, which means “attention” (remains in the English word “aware”), and “nehmen”, which means “to take, understand”), and usually means “to be aware of” or “to understand” through the five senses. …
