A representative Buddhist sculptor of the Asuka period. Also known as Tori Busshi, and written as Kurasaku Tori. According to the Nihon Shoki, he was the grandson of the immigrant Shiba Tatsuto and the son of Kurabe Tasuna, who is said to have created the 180 cm statue at Sakata-dera Temple. He is the creator of the gilt bronze Shaka Triad (623) in the Golden Hall of Horyu-ji Temple, and his name is written on the inscription on the halo (see Shaka Nyorai statue). He was ordered by Prince Shotoku to create many Buddhist statues. In 606, he created the 180 cm statue in the Golden Hall of Gangoji Temple, and was awarded the rank of Daijin and 20 hectares of rice paddy land for his achievements. His style was based on the form and style of Buddhist statues from the Northern Wei Dynasty in China, and his style was more refined, with distinctive features such as wooden ears, almond-shaped eyes, large hands with long fingers, long, slender necks, the way the undergarments were worn, and the mokakeza (pedestal). Buddhist statues in this style are called Tori-yo (Dori-style).
