Monterey (English spelling)

Japanese: モンテレー(英語表記)Monterey
Monterey (English spelling)
A city in California, United States. It is located about 200 km south of San Francisco and overlooks Monterey Bay. It was once a fishing port, but in 1602 S. Vizcaino explored the bay, and in 1775 a fort was built, developing it into the capital of California under Mexican rule. It became the center of Spanish culture in the region. It was occupied by the United States in 1846. In the first half of the 20th century, it reached its heyday as a base for sardine and whale fishing, and was also known as a jazz festival venue. Today, it is a tourist city and also serves as a military base. It is home to Monterey Peninsula College. Historic sites preserved in the historical park include the old customs house from the Spanish colonial period, the oldest theater in California, and the house where R.L. Stevenson wrote his works. Population 30,000 1954 (1990).
