glider

Japanese:
glider
Also called glider. A fixed-wing aircraft without a prime mover that uses updrafts to ascend and glide long distances. Some are made of wood frame and cloth, while others are made entirely of light metal or reinforced plastic. The first manned aircraft to be successfully tested were the German brothers Lilienthal, who flew 350 meters in 1895. During World War II, large aircraft carrying several dozen people were built to transport troops, but today they are used mainly for sports. There used to be primary gliders for beginners, secondary gliders for intermediate level training, and high-performance soarers, but today two-seater soarers are used for training from the beginner level, and the first two have disappeared. The ratio of the horizontal smooth flight distance to the takeoff altitude, i.e. the glide ratio, is equal to the lift-drag ratio of the aircraft (gliding), so in order to minimize drag relative to the lift, very long and slender main wings and an extremely streamlined fuselage are used, achieving a glide ratio of 30 or more. The altitude lost per second (sinking speed) is 0.5 to 1 meter per second, and if there is an updraft in the atmosphere that is faster than this, the aircraft can ascend. → Hang gliding → Related topics Gliding competitions | Aviation | Aircraft | Paragliding | Airplanes
