〘Noun〙 (mosaic, mosaïque)① A picture or pattern created by arranging and gluing small pieces of stone, glazed pottery, glass, seashells, eggshells, etc. of various colors. Also, this type of art form. It was particularly developed in ancient Rome and Byzantium. *Man'yūkichō (1877)〈Nakai Hiroshi〉vol. 2 "The exquisite stone paintings (mosaic) on the large stone pillars are beautiful and exquisite"② The phenomenon in which one or more genetically different traits appear in a single living organism. A type of deformity. A word used mainly about animals. The plant equivalents of chimeras and variegation are not called mosaics. They are often seen in insects. For example, butterflies and moths have symmetrical light and dark colors on the left and right sides of their bodies. ③ (figuratively) A collection of various things.
