A labor dispute occurred at the government-run Yawata Steel Works in 1920. At the time, there were two unions, the Japan Labor Union and a branch of the Yuaikai, and in January the Labor Union submitted a petition calling for an eight-hour workday, among other things. The authorities refused to negotiate and fired its members, so on February 5th, over 30,000 employees went on strike, and for the first time since the steelworks opened, the blast furnaces went out. Due to the repression, everyone temporarily went back to work. Later, under the leadership of Kato Kanju, they went on strike again. In March, 250 people were fired and 63 were indicted, resulting in a crushing defeat. After this, the steelworks effectively accepted the union's demands, such as implementing an eight-hour workday.
