A collection of Buddhist treatises from the Liang dynasty in China. 14 volumes. Edited by Sengyou (445-518) of the Liang dynasty, who also compiled the Chinese translation of the Buddhist scriptures, the Tripitaka Records. After its introduction into China, early Buddhism was always looked down upon and rejected as the religion of barbarians in China, where Confucianism was prevalent. Before Buddhism was established as the religion of the Chinese people, many treatises on the relationship between the three religions, including Confucianism and Taoism, were published. Sengyou's position was that "the Way is propagated by people, and the teachings are made clear by writing," and he compiled representative discussions in this book with the goal of protecting the law. This is a valuable collection of materials that is indispensable for elucidating early Chinese Buddhism.
