Koizumi Sakutaro - Koizumi Sakutaro

Japanese: 小泉策太郎 - こいずみさくたろう
Koizumi Sakutaro - Koizumi Sakutaro

A journalist and politician from the late Meiji to early Showa periods. His pen name was Sanshin. He was born on November 3, 1872 in Koura (now Minamiizu Town), Kamo District, Shizuoka Prefecture. He was an avid reader of Kokumin no Tomo and after working as a reporter for Shizuoka Nippo, he became a reporter for Jiyu Shimbun in 1894 (Meiji 27), where he became acquainted with Kōtoku Shūsui and Sakai Toshihiko and formed close friendships with them throughout his life. In 1895, he became a reporter for Mesamashi Shimbun, and later became editor-in-chief of Kyushu Shimbun. During this time, he published historical biographies such as Yui Shōsetsu and Oda Nobunaga. He made a huge profit from stocks, and in the general election of May 1912 (Meiji 45), he became a member of the Diet representing Shizuoka Prefecture, and was elected seven times in a row thereafter, belonging to the Seiyukai party. In 1924 (Taisho 13), he encouraged Takahashi Korekiyo, president of the Seiyukai Party, to resign and enter the House of Representatives, which led to the Second Constitutional Government Protection Movement, which overthrew the Cabinet of Kiyoura Keigo. In 1925, he orchestrated the retirement of Takahashi and the appointment of Tanaka Giichi as president, and throughout the early Showa period, he displayed his abilities as a strategist and mastermind in the political world, occupying a hidden position. He died on July 28, 1937.
