Synthetic division

Japanese: 組立除法 - くみたてじょほう（英語表記）synthetic division

This is a calculation method for dividing a polynomial in x by a linear expression of the form x - a. For example, if you were to divide 2 x ³ - x +1 by x +3, you would do it like this. In general, when dividing c ₀ x ⁿ + c ₁ x ^{n -1} + c ₂ x ^{n -2} + ... + c _{n -1} x + c _n by x - a , if you use b ₀ = c ₀ , b ₁ = c ₁ - ab ₀ , b ₂ = c ₂ - ab ₁ , ... , b _{n -1} = c _{n -1} - ab _{n -2} , r = c _n - ab _{n -1} , the quotient will be b ₀ x ^{n -1} + b ₁ x ^{n -2} + b ₂ x ^{n -2} + ... + b _{n -1} , and the remainder will be r .
