Omonogawa River

Japanese: 雄物川 - おものがわ
Omonogawa River
A river that originates in the Ou Mountains at the southeastern end of Akita Prefecture and flows into the Sea of Japan in Akita City. It is 133 km long and has a drainage area of 4,710 km2 . The Minase River, Yakunai River, Naruse River, and others join the river in the Yokote Basin, and Tama River, famous for its poisonous waters originating from Hachimantai, joins the river in Omagari. In ancient times, it was called Senboku River, and in the early modern period, it was also written as Omono River, as it carried tribute. Fish and salt were transported upstream, and Sendai North America and timber downstream. River ports such as Omori, Kakumagawa (Daisen City), Omagari, Jinguji (Daisen City), and Kariwano flourished. The Akita Plain was formed downstream, and a spillway was opened to prevent the silting up of Akita Port. The river basin was once a place where scrub typhus was common.
