Tsuyama Incident

Japanese: 津山事件 - つやまじけん

A rare mass murder case in the history of Japanese crime, committed by a 23-year-old man. It was so named because the crime took place in Nishikamo Village (now Kamo Town), Tomata County, near Tsuyama City, Okayama Prefecture. The perpetrator, Toi Mutsuo (1915-38), was naturally sensitive and delicate, and adored his grandmother and older sister. However, he developed inner conflicts due to contracting pulmonary tuberculosis, failing the conscription examination, and setbacks in his relationships with the opposite sex, and at around the age of 20, he began to have suicidal thoughts. This thought then gave rise to a desire for revenge and murder against the villagers, and after careful planning, training, and rehearsals, he finally carried out the crime at 2 a.m. on May 21, 1938.

23歳の男性が引き起こした日本犯罪史上稀有（けう）な大量殺人事件。現場が岡山県津山市に近い苫田郡西加茂村(現，加茂町)なので，この名がある。犯人の都井睦雄(1915‐38)は，元来，敏感･繊細で，祖母と姉を敬慕していたが，肺結核の罹患，徴兵検査の不合格，異性関係の挫折などから内面の葛藤が強まり，20歳ごろ自殺観念が生ずる。ついで，この観念を母体にして村人への復讐および殺人衝動が芽生え，周到な計画･訓練･予行ののち，ついに1938年5月21日午前2時，実行に移る。
