...The Italian navigator A. Vespucci's book "The New World" (1503) contains a description of a new starry sky, and the Italian A. Pigafetta's "Account of a Circumnavigation of the World" (1523), who accompanied the Portuguese navigator Magellan, records the Southern Cross and the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds. The first person to name the southern constellations was the Bavarian lawyer Johann Bayer (1572-1625), who established 12 constellations according to the notes of the Dutch navigator Petrus Theodori, who died off the coast of Java in 1596, and depicted these constellations in his star atlas "Uranometria" (1603), which was made up of 51 sheets depicting the entire sky. Bayer's constellations are the Wind Bird, the Crane, the Peacock, the Tanager, the Bee, the Phoenix, the Marlin, the Flying Fish, the Chameleon, the Water Snake, the Indian, and the Southern Triangle, and are characterized by the use of unusual animal names native to the south. *Some of the terminology explanations that mention "Uranometria" are listed below.
