Uranometria (English spelling)

...The Italian navigator A. Vespucci's book "The New World" (1503) contains a description of a new starry sky, and the Italian A. Pigafetta's "Account of a Circumnavigation of the World" (1523), who accompanied the Portuguese navigator Magellan, records the Southern Cross and the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds. The first person to name the southern constellations was the Bavarian lawyer Johann Bayer (1572-1625), who established 12 constellations according to the notes of the Dutch navigator Petrus Theodori, who died off the coast of Java in 1596, and depicted these constellations in his star atlas "Uranometria" (1603), which was made up of 51 sheets depicting the entire sky. Bayer's constellations are the Wind Bird, the Crane, the Peacock, the Tanager, the Bee, the Phoenix, the Marlin, the Flying Fish, the Chameleon, the Water Snake, the Indian, and the Southern Triangle, and are characterized by the use of unusual animal names native to the south.

…イタリアの航海者A.ベスプッチの著書《新世界》(1503)には新しい星空の記述があり，ポルトガルの航海者マゼランに同行したイタリア人A.ピガフェッタの《世界一周の記録》(1523)には南十字星や大，小マゼラン雲の記録がある。南天星座を初めて命名したのはドイツのバイエルンの法律家バイヤーJohann Bayer(1572‐1625)で，1596年ジャワ島沖で客死したオランダの航海者テオドリPetrus Theodoriの手記にしたがい12星座を設定し，全天を51枚に描いた星図《ウラノメトリアUranometria》(1603)にこれらの星座を描写している。バイヤーの星座はふうちょう(風鳥)，つる，くじゃく，きょしちょう(巨嘴鳥)，みつばち，ほうおう(鳳凰)，かじき(旗魚)，とびうお，カメレオン，みずへび，インディアン，みなみのさんかくの12星座で南方原産の珍奇な動物名を用いたのが特色である。…
