...In Hollywood, which was entering its Golden Age with its ties to Wall Street financial capital, MGM's trademark was a roaring lion emblazoned with the motto "Art for Art's Sake." Based on the tradition of the "star system" that its predecessor, Metro, had laid the foundation for in the early 1920s with films starring Rudolph Valentino, MGM boasted "more stars than there are stars in the sky" such as Greta Garbo, Clark Gable, Gloria Swanson, and Robert Taylor, and aimed solely at producing "wholesome entertainment films." In particular, the studio placed such importance on female audiences that it was called the "women's studio" (its monumental masterpiece was Gone with the Wind, 1939). It also grew with musical films as one of its characteristics, starting with Broadway Melody, Ziegfeld's Big Bad Show (1935), The Wizard of Oz (1939), and Arthur Freed's productions of The Big Bad Show (1949), An American in Paris (1951), Singin' in the Rain (1952), The Band Wagon (1953), and The Good Daddy (1958). Its heyday was in the 1930s and early 1940s, but during the recession caused by a decline in audiences, Dori Schary (1905-1980), who became vice president of production in 1942 after Thalberg's death, demonstrated her skills with low budgets and a rationalistic production policy.

From a color movie

...The first feature film made using this system, Vanity Fair (1935), pioneered a unique field in which psychological depictions were emphasized through color effects, and color film was considered to have come of age. The Trail of the Lonesome Pine (1936) was the first film shot outdoors using Technicolor, and after films such as The Desert Garden (1936), A Star is Born (1937), and the British film The Wings of Dawn (1937), the success of Gone with the Wind (1939) brought color film to a peak, and Technicolor became synonymous with color film. In 1939, the Academy Awards were awarded a color cinematography category.
