Yan Wen-gui (English name)

Yan Wen-gui (English name)
A court painter in the early Northern Zong Dynasty. Born in Wuxing (Zhejiang Province). As he was said to be "a humble man of the Jianghai", he was a former soldier from Jiangnan, and during the reign of Taizong, he was recommended by Gao Yi and became a tutor at the Painting Academy. His style is thought to be a hybrid of northern China, which dominated landscape painting at the time, and southern China, where he was born, and this suggests the direction of later court landscape painting styles. His known work, View of the Jiangshan Tower (Osaka Municipal Museum of Art), skillfully depicts the passing of a storm as the scroll unfolds, suggesting his meticulous and varied painting style that was called "the Yan family's landscapes".
